New Zealand’s wild Kaimanawa horses are part of our national heritage — a living link to the past and a symbol of freedom, resilience, and quiet strength. As one of the last remaining wild horse populations in the country, they hold a special place in our hearts and history.

The legacy of the Kaimanawa horses

These incredible animals roam the Kaimanawa Ranges in the central North Island. Descended from cavalry and farm horses introduced in the 1800s, they’ve adapted to the rugged landscape and now live completely untamed. While their numbers are carefully managed to protect the fragile native environment, their intelligence, calmness, and character have earned them a loyal following among horse lovers and conservationists alike.

Having recently spent time with a few of these wild horses, just weeks off the ranges, I was struck by their gentle nature and willingness to connect. One even ate from my hand — a moment that left a lasting impression. It showed me how quickly they respond to patience and kindness, and just how much they have to offer. Even older ones who may never be trained for riding can still become trusted companions and symbols of something wilder, freer, and deeply moving.

As an artist and lifelong horse lover, this experience inspired me to launch Brushstrokes for the Kaimanawa Horses — a dedicated collection within my studio. Whenever you see this tagline on one of my pieces, it means that 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Legacy Foundation, helping support rescue efforts, rehoming, and care.
